Solution Annealing and Precipitation Hardening
A two-stage heat-treatment route for suitable precipitation-hardening materials and specifications.
STAGE 01
Solution Annealing
Solution annealing prepares a suitable alloy by heating it under controlled conditions so specified alloying constituents can dissolve into a solid solution. The subsequent cooling route retains the condition needed for the ageing stage.
The exact cycle depends on the identified material and governing specification.
STAGE 02
Precipitation Hardening
Precipitation hardening, also known as age hardening, follows solution annealing where the material and specification require the complete route. Controlled ageing develops finely distributed precipitates that increase strength and hardness.
It should not be presented as a universal treatment or assumed to be appropriate for every component.
