Annealing is a broad group of treatments involving controlled heating and cooling to obtain a required material condition. Normalising is a steel treatment in which cooling is normally carried out in air to refine and homogenise structure.

The cycle is selected from the material grade, starting condition and objective. Heating rate, soak, atmosphere and cooling route are controlled because they influence scale, decarburisation, hardness and microstructure.

Depending on grade and specification, these treatments may improve machinability, reduce hardness, refine grain structure, homogenise prior processing or prepare material for a later operation.
