Carburising is a thermochemical diffusion treatment for suitable low-carbon and alloy case-hardening steels. Carbon is introduced at elevated temperature and the component is subsequently hardened using a controlled cycle.

Carbon diffuses into the surface while the part is held in a controlled carbon-bearing environment. Process time and temperature influence the carbon profile and case depth; quenching and tempering then develop the required properties.

The process is selected for components requiring wear resistance and contact-fatigue performance without making the full section uniformly hard and brittle.

Quote requests should state the full steel grade, case-depth definition, surface and core hardness requirements, drawing dimensions, machining allowance and areas that must remain soft.
